Why You Should Incorporate Green Tea in Your Skincare Routine!
Green tea, which comes from the plant Camellia sinensis, is loaded with strong antioxidants called polyphenols. Polyphenols can fight against free radicals, which are responsible for damaging cells and tissues. A type of polyphenols abundantly found in green tea, EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate), is considered to be its most important molecule! It has so many powerful properties that are beneficial for the skin:
Anti-aging
We all know that excessive exposure to UV rays can lead to sunburns, wrinkles and even skin cancer. Studies have found that the polyphenols found in green tea prevents free radical damage such as damage from exposure to UV rays. Due to this ability, green tea is widely used in skin care products to fight signs of aging like wrinkles and sun damage. Yay for anti-aging properties!
Anti-inflammatory
For centuries, green tea has been used to help fight inflammation, reducing redness and swelling!
Fights Acne
Due to its antibacterial properties, green tea can fight against acne-causing bacteria. Additionally, EGCG helps blocks IGF-1 (Insulin-like growth factor 1); high levels of IGF-1 causes the skin to produce excess sebum and oil, clog pores, and increase inflammation. So by lowering the levels IGF-1, green tea can help treat acne. Emphasis on ‘can‘ because, as we all have experienced, acne isn’t a simple issue. It can be caused by so many various factors other than high level of IGF-1 or bacteria. Green tea can help fight acne in certain cases, but it’s not to say it will successfully fight acne.
Reduce Puffiness or Swollen Eyes
The caffeine in green teas constricts blood vessels around the eyes, thereby reducing the areas’s puffiness. Say bye bye to puffy eyes!
It’s no wonder that green tea is so popular in skin care! The Sooni team has been looking for an effective K-beauty product that incorporates green tea. After testing the Jant Blanc Green Tea Balancing Toner, we were so excited to include it in our March Sooni Pouch!
